The Mara of the aggregates is the five appropriated aggregates. The Mara of the afflictions is the afflictions that operate in the three realms. The Mara of death is that which causes the time of death for sentient beings among the types of sentient beings. The deity Mara is that which becomes the deity Isvara born in the Desire Realm who comes in order to impede and distract those who are striving for virtue to transcend completely the aggregates, afflictions, and death.
