What are we really doing when we begin meditating? We are transforming the busyness that is our normal mental state into relaxation. This is something we all need very much. As we begin we are not interested so much in controlling our minds. We are not criticising our normal mental state, telling ourselves, “Oh, you naughty mind, you are so wild. You have to stop this!” We should be more relaxed and open and less concerned about having control. Therefore we start off gently, just bringing our mind back to the feeling of our body when it strays.
