We have to understand the incredible suffering that exists in the world. If we do not understand suffering, we are not really relating to the situation. Most of us do not relate to the suffering; we ignore the basic nature of what is going on. When we contemplate the pain that there is, we do relate to it. We understand the incredible depths of the sorrow and misery that sentient beings are going through, tormented and tormenting themselves endlessly. We realise that this does not need to happen, and we find a tremendous compassion arising within us.
